A rather uncommon white oak with a spotty existence, bluff oaks can be found along…well… bluffs. To be more precise, they are found along well drained terraces and bluffs along river systems. Once, the bluff oak was almost eradicated because of its popularity during the 1800’s for casket building. Its scarcity these days might have something to do with flood control, or the lack of fire usage on the landscape. Bluff oaks resemble a smaller version of true white oak, and drops loads of small, tasty morsels on good years. A great home for this beauty would be around your cabin or driveway. Just be sure you have a window nearby to view its fall color and wildlife that will literally fight over its bounty.
